That's where Pastor Rick Gray wanted to build his new house.

Because the area was already under construction, the machinery didn't look out of place. The Williamsburg County Sheriff's Office is investigating, and Gray says they are looking at surveillance cameras from the property.

It's estimated it will cost about $30,000 to replace the cement work alone. Gray says not to worry, he will rebuild.

http://www.live5news.com/Global/story.asp?S=8867663

Someone threw that boy in that pond," Yon said.

Last Wednesday, Yon says Johnson knocked off work at the Piggly Wiggly on Russell Street around 2pm. Yon managed Johnson there for 10 years.

"We all here are sad. Our customers are sad because they all loved the man. He was a loving and warm person. To know him was to love him," Yon said.

Little did Yon know, Wednesday would be the last time he would see his friend alive. He says Johnson's mother picked him up that day and took him home. She told Yon that later on that day, someone her son knew picked him up from his house and took him to do some yard work.

"And that's the last the family ever seen him," Yon said.

The next morning, Johnson's family told sheriff's deputies he was missing. Then Sunday afternoon, investigators say a truck driver was passing over a creek on North Road and saw a body in the water. It was Johnson.

"I don't know why someone would even think of doing a crime like this," Yon said.

Investigators say a preliminary autopsy shows Johnson drowned and didn't show any signs of foul play, but at this point they're still not ruling it out. Yon definitely isn't.

"They will find ‘em. It may take a little while, but they will be caught," Yon said.

A spokesman with the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office says investigators are still in the early stages of this investigation. Right now, they're waiting on the results of a toxicology report.

Reported by Trey Paul

Posted by Jeremy Turnage

http://www.wistv.com/Global/story.asp?S=8869033&nav=0RaP

He was found strangled to death.

Debbie Spry decided to do some research. She discovered under South Carolina law, a missing person had to be under the age of 17 for police to launch an active investigation.

So she's pushing to get the age raised to 18 and under to require authorities to look for missing persons.

"If I had another child that was 17, I would leave the state during that child's 17th year," she said.

Travis Spry's body was found on Mossy Road in Jedburg eight days after he was reported missing. His mom says a change in the law most likely would not have saved his life, but it might have given cops a chance to find the body sooner, and given prosecutors a chance to go after a murder conviction.

"Vital evidence was destroyed, including my sons body, so you had absolutely no forensic evidence in his case to prosecute his offenders," Ms. Spry said.

26 year old Travis Casey pleaded guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter and was given 22 years in prison. 23 year old Christopher Bryant pleaded guilty to Accessory to a Felony and got 13 years in the state pen.

"They've been punished and sentenced to jail, but they will go walking the streets again," Spry said.

Charleston State Senator Glenn Mcconnell says it's time to change the missing persons law.

"A child under 18 years of age, that's a missing child, and they're missing, that's common sense," Senator McConnell said.

It's also common sense to Debbie Spry, who says she won't give up in her mission for change.

"I feel if this can be changed, it could help another family not go through what my family went through, and my son wouldn't have died in vain," she said.

http://www.live5news.com/Global/story.asp?S=8866666

Dixie Ponytail Softball championships, Lake City Firefighter Thomas Black and Fire Chief Tony Singletary were recognized for work they have done at the old National Guard Armory building on their time off, Police Chief Billy Brown was recognized for saving the city almost $9,000 in overtime, Mayor Lovith Anderson Jr. was given a certificate of apprecia-tion from Florence County Sheriff’s Office for his assistance with the Annual Night Out and Lt. Joseph Cooper was given multiple certificates of appreciation for his community service working with the youth.
Though Anderson said no action was taken during executive session to discuss the sale of city property, Council authorized the Mayor to enter into a lease agreement for the old Civil Air Patrol Building at the Lake City Municipal Airport.
Lowder said he was approached about renting the building to possibly be used by a catering service.
Lowder said the 1,100 square-foot building is presently vacant and “not in top notch shape.”
“Anything we do at that airport to increase activity is an asset,” Lowder said.
Anderson and Lowder are to check with local realtors to determine a fair rental price for the facility.
During Lowder’s report to Council, he said Florence County is passing a 2 percent hospitality tax on food and beverages for unincorporated portions of the county. He said the county can only pass a 1 percent hos-pitality tax within city limits. If the city is willing to pass a 1 percent hospitality tax so the tax would be consistent, Lowder said the county will guarantee the money comes back to the city to be used for tourism and related items.
Lowder said the tax is similar to the hospitality tax that is currently charged for hotel rooms in Florence County. He said the 1 percent was estimated at $100,000.
During the public comment portion of the meeting, Jamie Daniels from The History Store suggested Coun-cil do something to recognize the city’s 125th birthday, which is in December.
Also during the meeting, Tony Whitlock and Donnie Matthews were appointed to the Airport Commission for three-year terms and Council accepted the lowest bid of $59,148 from MH&S Directional for the Loop Road Railroad Bore.

http://www.scnow.com/scp/news/local/article/williams_named_lake_citys_assistant_police_chief/12849/
